Check, Correct, Submit: How to ensure accuracy in your Scopus Author Profile

on Fri, 06/24/2016 - 00:21

The data behind your Scopus Author Profile informs the outward view of your scholarly information—total number of citations, publication history, h-index—not only in Scopus itself, but across other entities supported by Scopus data. These measures may play a factor in tenure, funding or in other decisions; therefore, it is important to ensure your profile reflects your information correctly.  Despite the sophistication of the algorithmic profiling used by Scopus, algorithms cannot always match all documents to a single profile with 100% accuracy. So, in Scopus, what’s the best way to ensure you get credit where credit is due? Check your Scopus Author profile and submit your feedback.

In her recent webinar, Jessica Kowalski covered Scopus algorithmic profiling along with much more about Scopus author profiles in general. Click on the image below and watch minutes 00:18:37‒00:21:00 to learn more details about algorithmic profiling.

Even if you do not have access to Scopus, you can still review your profile and submit corrections, making sure that the correct papers are associated with your preferred profile name.

Here’s how (click on the screen images to enlarge):

  1. Choose your path:
    1. If you have access to Scopus, start from the ‘Author Search’ form
    2. If you do not have access to Scopus, use the free author lookup tool here.

You can also use the web form to request changes (see below)

  1. From either starting point you will be directed to a list of results with possible profiles matching your search. Find and select your profile. If there is more than one profile under your name, select the one that more accurately reflects your details.

  1. This will open the author details page containing information about an author’s documents, citations, h-index, co-authors and more. From here there are 2 ways you can be guided through the process of checking and correcting your profile. One is a 5 step process using the Scopus Author Feedback Wizard and the other is a similar process, but also allows you to integrate your Scopus information with ORCID:
    1. To use the Scopus Author Feedback Wizard, click on the <Request author detail corrections> link.
    2. To both review your Scopus Author Profile and also integrate your publications into ORCID, click on <Add to ORCID>.

  1. Both tools walk you through a series of steps allowing you to:
    1. select your preferred profile name
    2. confirm that all the documents listed in your profile are correct, or indicate ones that should be removed
    3. search for and request missing documents to be added to your profile
    4. submit your changes to the Scopus Author feedback team

The Scopus to ORCID workflow additionally allows you to send your Scopus author ID and list of publications to your ORCID profile. Your ORCID number then becomes connected to your profile within Scopus. This not only means you can be found by ORCID number, but that others viewing your Scopus author details can link to and read your profile within ORCID.

  1. Once the Scopus Author feedback team receives your request, they will begin the process of validating and incorporating the corrections.

Submitting changes via the web form

You can also use a web form to submit some changes, but please note that only a single change can be requested per completed form. In addition to requesting that your author profile to be split or merged, the web form can also be used to report a missing document, missing or incorrect citations, and incorrect document details.

Here's how to submit a web form request:

  1. Open a web form.
  2. Enter in your details into the form
  3. Ensure you select the appropriate category under the drop-down menu under ‘I have a question about’, e.g.:
    • Missing documents
    • Add/remove citations
    • Document details are incorrect
    • Author profile split/merge
    • Author profile detail corrections

This ensures that your request will go directly to the right team and is processed quicker.

  1. If you have a PDF of the final version of the missing article or missing citing articles, attach this to the form. This will help to accelerate the process.
  2. Click ‘Send message’
