The launch of Scopus AI in January 2024 marked a new chapter in academic research. A year later, we celebrate not just its success, but the innovations it continues to bring to researchers and librarians alike. Designed with a clear vision to elevate human ingenuity, Scopus AI has redefined how we approach research discovery by seamlessly integrating trusted content with cutting-edge AI technology.

To maintain the rigor and integrity of academic research, Scopus AI operates with transparency, grounding its features in trusted Scopus content. The platform incorporates strict safeguards against hallucinations and biases, so you can be confident that every discovery is reliable. Guided by Elsevier’s Responsible AI Principles and drawing from curated and comprehensive Scopus data, Scopus AI has become a trusted research partner.

Scopus AI doesn’t aim to replace researchers or librarians but to empower them. Over the past year, it has proven to be a vital tool, enabling professionals to unlock interdisciplinary connections, identify emerging areas of study, and streamline their research processes. Here, we reflect on Scopus AI’s remarkable milestones, features and innovations while celebrating the dedicated community of users who have embraced it.

According to user feedback, 88% of users said Scopus AI enhances creative thinking, while 70% reported saving at least 30% of time spent on research tasks.

Innovative features to boost researcher creativity

From its inception, Scopus AI was envisioned to tackle some of the biggest challenges in research, such as information overload and disciplinary silos. Its core features enable you to uncover new opportunities, refine your research questions, and explore vast academic content with unprecedented clarity.

Key highlights include:

  • Summaries with Scopus references: The Summary is an easy-to-digest overview that provides a concise response to your initial query. The Expanded summary offers more depth and a wider range of perspectives.
  • Reflection layer: The prompt engineering guides the large language model to indicate how relevant the response is to your query. The Summary makes it clear whether confidence in the response is low, medium or high, while the last paragraph adds nuance about the information available.
  • Foundational documents: The list of Foundational documents illustrates which papers influenced the documents that Scopus AI used to generate its response, specifically the Summary.
  • Concept map: A visual representation of interdisciplinary connections that offers you a bird’s-eye view of your research topic. This helped researcher Li Liu from the University of Science and Technology of China surface intersecting areas she hadn’t noticed before.
Evolving with the research community

Since Scopus AI’s introduction, the Scopus Product Team has continued to explore new ways it can support research — and your feedback has helped. By communicating with the research community and listening to users, we’ve added several innovations in the past year.

Emerging themes: This tool represents a significant leap forward in identifying trending and underserved research topics. Emerging themes addresses a critical need for researchers who frequently seek out new areas of focus but lack consistent methodologies to do so. Powered by Scopus AI’s proprietary Vector Calculation Service, this feature helps researchers:

  • Discover and cluster novel themes within their fields
  • Identify white space opportunities for publications, funding, and collaborations
  • Spot growing trends and themes before they gain mainstream attention

Copilot:  This query tool broke new ground with its ability to combine vector and keyword search methods. Copilot provides a transparency layer that explains exactly how the tool breaks down and optimizes your query. It is one of the very few generative AI solutions on the market to do this. Copilot refines results with precision and enables a fluid, context-aware interaction with the ability to:

  • Break down and optimize queries to improve the specificity of results
  • Support queries in multiple languages
  • Accept longer text queries
  • Consider more results

What’s next for Scopus AI?

The next chapter of Scopus AI will focus on creating additional features that enable researchers to achieve greater outcomes in their work.  As its capabilities grow to include smarter hypothesis generation, deeper interdisciplinary insights, and even more intuitive features, the team at Scopus AI is committed to pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable in research.
