Meet the CSAB: Professor and Subject Chair Patrick Palmieri

This is the latest blog article in a series featuring the Scopus Content Selection and Advisory Board (CSAB). The CSAB is an international and editorially independent group of scientists, researchers and librarians who represent the major scientific disciplines. Using strict title selection criteria, these experts determine whether journals are eligible for indexing in Scopus, and they continually re-evaluate these titles to make sure quality is maintained.

Throughout this series, we will introduce you to individual board members, offering insights into their roles within the CSAB and exploring their perspectives on the purpose of the board.

Dr. Patrick A. Palmieri
CSAB Chair – Nursing and Health Professions
Universidad Privada Norbert Wiener in Lima, Peru

In this article, we profile Dr. Patrick A. Palmieri, a nurse practitioner, researcher, investigator and journal editorDr. Palmieri has committed his professional life to advancing healthcare and research across the globe. His work extends beyond traditional boundaries, making him a driving force for progress in evidence-based healthcare, patient safety and quality improvement.

A career rooted in diverse expertise

Patrick’s career is defined by its remarkable breadth. His primary research area, evidence synthesis, involves systematic and scoping reviews, crucial components of modern healthcare research. He supports these efforts through robust contributions to patient safety and quality improvement. Additionally, as part of the International Network for Nurses in HIV Research, he focuses on improving outcomes for people living with HIV/AIDS. His diverse research interests reflect his ability to bridge clinical practice, academic inquiry and system-wide organizational improvement.

Building a lasting legacy in healthcare

While Palmieri’s research impact is international, one of his most significant achievements took place in Peru. He co-led the development of the country’s largest vertically integrated and privately owned healthcare system. This project set a precedent by achieving the first international accreditation in Peruvian history, laying the foundation for higher healthcare standards nationwide.

His work went beyond infrastructure. Through capacity development, quality improvement initiatives and groundbreaking research, Palmieri helped forge a healthcare ecosystem that continues to improve the country’s medical landscape.

A critical role on the Scopus CSAB

Patrick began his tenure with the Scopus CSAB in 2024 and serves as a subject chair overseeing journals related to nursing and health professions. His role focuses on ensuring that only the highest-quality journals become part of the Scopus database, a resource relied upon by researchers globally.

“Quality and integrity go hand in hand,” he explains. “The board continues to uphold these fundamental values, ensuring that researchers, educators, and healthcare professionals have access to reliable, evidence-based resources.

Championing transparency and AI in research

Palmieri believes that transparency is vital for ensuring integrity in publishing, a principle closely tied to the Scopus mission. The level of accessibility Scopus provides ensures that every researcher and institutional user can evaluate the trustworthiness of journals, articles and authors.

He is particularly optimistic about the role of generative AI (GenAI) in streamlining evidence synthesis and uncovering insights. However, he acknowledges the need for careful oversight to ensure that AI tools operate with transparency and ethical algorithms.

“What excites me most is how AI supports researchers, particularly younger scientists, in identifying gaps in the literature. This can accelerate discoveries in ways we’ve never seen before,” he says. Yet he also underlines that AI must always operate under the scrutiny of subject matter experts to prevent misuse or misinterpretation.

Life beyond research

Apart from his professional pursuits, Patrick enjoys spending time with his daughter, including playing tennis together. Sessions on his elliptical cross trainer and time engaging with his family are integral for maintaining life balance.

Advancing progress together

Palmieri’s deep-rooted commitment to healthcare and research spans clinical practice, academic leadership, and groundbreaking projects that leave lasting global impacts. His work with the Scopus CSAB exemplifies his dedication to maintaining the highest standards in publishing, ensuring that researchers across the world have access to trustworthy, high-quality information.
